He was sealed as stated in the story until the chakra used to create the seal ran out. The only chakra that was left was in the two other seals.

In the story it states that he was sealed in a kamui like place. While he was sealed he did not physically age. It was like he was having a long dream.

Also his time at the academy is something that he doesn’t remember. Though If you really need it to be in the story. He did stand out at the academy, but Kakashi who was in the same year as him was just in a class of his own. This caused people not to notice Alex as much.

At the very start it says that this is happening Pre the start of naruto. Meaning Naruto is yet to be born. Then Madara seals him until the era of Boruto.
